Common questions

How do I get my records out?

Open Export and choose a tax year or any date range. You get a CSV with fixed columns plus a zip of the matching receipt images, capped at 500 files or 200 MB with anything omitted named in the export. Settings > Your data also exports a JSON dump of your records and their edit history. Export keeps working after a subscription lapses — cancelling never removes a record you have already captured.

What does the paid plan cost, and how do I restore it?

Plus is an annual auto-renewing subscription billed by the App Store; the price shown at purchase is the price you pay. It renews unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends, and you cancel in Settings > Apple Account > Subscriptions on your iPhone, not in Deduct. If you reinstall or move to a new phone, open the paywall and tap Restore purchases.

What does the free plan include?

Twenty confirmed expense records a calendar month. Drafts and journeys do not count towards it. Hitting the cap does not throw the capture away — it is saved as a draft and the paywall opens, so nothing you captured is lost. One quirk worth knowing: a record counts against the month of the expense date, not the day you captured it.

How do I delete my account?

Settings > Your data > Delete my account. You type DELETE in capitals to confirm, and the screen lists what will go before you do. Deletion removes your receipt images, your records and their edit history, your profile, and the account itself. It cannot be undone, so export first if you want to keep anything.

Does Deduct track my location?

Only between Start trip and End trip, and only to measure the distance of that journey. A notification shows for the whole time a trip is running so you can always see it, the tracking is stopped and unregistered when you tap End trip, and individual coordinates are never stored or transmitted — only the total distance and the labels you typed. If you would rather not grant location at all, log the journey by hand instead.

What happens to a voice note?

It is turned into text on your device by iOS Speech recognition, and the audio is never uploaded or saved. If your device cannot do on-device recognition, Deduct says so and offers the manual form rather than sending your voice anywhere.

What gets sent to an AI provider?

Only when you ask for a capture to be read automatically, and only the one thing being read: that receipt image, or that voice transcript. Nothing else about you is sent. Every value it proposes is shown to you with a confidence marker, and nothing is saved as a confirmed record until you tap to confirm it.

What does the sign-in email contain?

A link to tap, which signs you in on the device you opened it on. The link is single-use and expires. If you would rather not use email, Sign in with Apple is offered as well.

Does Deduct file my tax return?

No. Deduct captures and exports records so you or your accountant can use them. It does not submit anything to HMRC, it is not Making Tax Digital software, and the set-aside figure on the dashboard is an assumption-labelled estimate, not tax advice.

Will I lose a capture if I have no signal?

No. Every record is written to your phone before anything touches the network, and syncs by itself when you are back online. If a photo or an automatic reading fails, the capture is kept as a draft rather than thrown away.

Known issues

  • Signing in by email sends you a link to tap rather than a six-digit code.
  • The free monthly allowance counts a record against the month of the expense date, not the day you captured it, so backdating a record does not count towards the current month.
